TREKKING
The majority of people who travel with us wish to spend some time in the mountains. At Active Eye we have designed tours that offer a comprehensive choice for most needs and levels of fitness. Treks that vary from easy day hikes around the Kathmandu Valley to strenuous multi day expeditions.

The old adage that 'the better prepared and fitter you are, the more likely you are to enjoy any sport,' particularly holds true to trekking. You do not need to be a super athlete, just realistic about what you can achieve. Many people who travel with us are keen hikers anyway, but not everyone. If you are not an avid hiker, a few weeks of walking before arrival would not go amiss. Often people tend to underestimate their capabilities, please contact us if you need advice.

The Annapurna Region
A combination of majestic beauty and accessibility has ensured that the Annapurna region is the most widely visited anywhere in the Himalayas.
Approximately 60% of trekkers visiting Nepal choose to trek here. Many trails follow or intersect the ancient salt trading route between Nepal and Tibet up the Kali Gandaki valley gorge. Both the wealth of well-established trading and trekking lodges as well as good road and air links with Kathmandu, have been instrumental in the great popularity of trekking here.

The region is situated north of the beautiful lakeside town of Pokhara, 200 kms west of Kathmandu. Pokhara is reached by either six very scenic hours by road or a twenty-five minute flight.

In a land that is already so varied, Annapurna stands out as the best example. It is in fact the most diverse protected area on earth.

Nowhere else in Nepal can you experience such a wide range of human culture and geography where seven ethnic groups live and work; from Hindu farmers to Tibetan Lamas. The region contains mountains of over 8000 mtrs and the deepest river gorge in the world.

Due to the extremes of elevation there is a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna; from sub tropical lowland forests of oak, bamboo and rhododendron in the south to the high alpine meadows and windswept plateaus in the northern regions that border Tibet. The Grey Languor monkey and a variety of cats and rodents are found at lower levels. The elusive Snow Leopard and The Himalayan Black Bear inhabit the higher altitudes (4500mtrs +); Over 400 species of birds have been recorded to date.

Pokhara

What the Kathmandu valley offers with its works of art and rich cultural heritage, Pokhara more than responds with its outstanding beauty. It has arguably the finest mountain backdrop on earth with the terrain sweeping from an altitude of 550 mtrs (1,800 feet) to reach over 8000 mtrs (28,000 feet) within a distance of approximately 50kms (31 miles.) It also provides a great base from which to prepare for and relax after a trek
Lake Phewa is a splendid mass of water, surrounded on one side by secluded green wooded hills and fringed on the other by small peaceful hotels guesthouses and restaurants.

Trekking in Nepal is an exhilarating experience, there is nothing quite like it anywhere on earth.Wether you are traveling by foot through breathtaking scenery or working as a team at high altitude to scale a summit, you are always alongside some of the most helpful, skilled and friendly mountain people anywhere in the World

A day in the mountains follows a natural rhythm, many people are up with a steaming cup of something to catch the first rays of sunrise breaking over the mountains.

After breakfast expect to hike for three hours or so in the morning before lunch. A further two or three hours is fairly normal in the afternoon. On the more popular trails there are places to rest for refreshment, apart from your daypack, the Nepali trekking team manage all other items.

Evening is a time to relax and rest up over a hot meal and reflect on the day.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trekking:
Maximum altitude: 3192 meters
Duration of Trek: 7 days mountain lodge

This is an ideal trek for beginners or for those who have limited time. The region is easily reached, within an hour of leaving Pokhara by road you are beginning the trek. It is the singular most popular trek in Nepal due
to its outstanding beauty and relative accessibility. The area is more developed than other trekking routes, local life however is still very much in evidence with the mountain vistas and overall ambiance considered to be some of the best in Nepal.
Perhaps the highlight of so many, is sunrise over Poon Hill, the highest point of the trek. Poon Hill commands a sweeping view of both the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Himals. There are several old villages and hamlets en route along with some fantastic rhododendron forests and crystal clear rivers that burst from the High Himalayas.
Most of the lodges on the way have good facilities, hot showers and good food.

Annapurna Base Camp:
Maximum Altitude: 4130 meters
Duration of Trek: 12 days mountain lodge
Annapurna Base Camp lies in an area known as the Sanctuary of Annapurna. It was a treasured and sacred spiritual refuge long before the first trekkers arrived.
A natural amphitheatre that is ringed by Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Varahashikhar, Gangapurna and the holy fishtail mountain (Macchapucchre). It became known as the Annapurna South Base Camp after the successful British summit expedition in 1970.
Essentially it is a three mile by five mile pocket of three glaciers encircled by nine icy summits. The tiny valley floor rarely receives more than seven hours of sunlight even on a clear day, because of the barrier effect of the peaks.
The first few days of the trek are spent travelling through old villages and lush rhodoendron forest, before reaching more barren and rugged terrain.
Chomrong, is last village of the valley where the twin peaks of Macchapuchre looking exactly like a fishtail, are clearly visible.
The following day or so bamboo becomes a major theme as we wind our way through dense bamboo forests. The mats on the walls and floors of the lodges, the dokos (carrying baskets) used by porters are all made from the forests around.
After leaving the forest behind, the landscape gives way to grey scree and scrub before reaching snow-fields on the approach to the sanctuary. The trail follows rocky ribs that descend sharply from either side and it is not uncommon at this stage to find yourself in swirling clouds.
From Base Camp there are some tremendous views : a labyrinth of mountains tower almost vertically above, with Annapurna I dominant.
We spend an hour or two here taking in the high mountains before commencing the five day return journey to Pokhara. This trek is a good introduction to trekking at higher altitudes, it provides a real mountain feel, without being too strenuous.

The Annapurna Circuit: 26 days.
Maximum altitude: 5416 meters
Duration of trek: 20 days mountain lodge

The Annapurna Cicuit takes you right around the Annapurna Massif. It is widely regarded as Nepal's 'trek-with-everything'.Green forests, tremendous mountain scenery with a mosaic of fascinating cultures, from Hindu farmers to Tibetan Llamas.
The trail leads northwards initially where we travel through some fascinating villages, crossing fields of paddy before dissecting the Marshyangdi river gorge.
The ascent towards Manang valley is fairly steady before it eventually emerges into the valley with a dramatic change of scenery. The valley is predominantly Tibetan in lifestyle and outlook, the following few days are spent traveling through some delightful Tibetan like settlements with tremendous views.
A day is taken side trekking for acclimatisation before the taxing ascent of the Thorang-La (5416m). This day over the pass is a long but a very rewarding one, with splendid views of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri and Dhampus Peak, among others.
From the pass, a steep descent of two to three hours leads to the pilgrimage site of Muktinath. The settlement has been a holy place for both Hindus and Buddhists for many centuries. Our return follows the Kali Gandaki River gorge (the deepest gorge in the world) through some very interesting Lower Mustang and Thakali villages. Kagbeni for example has great Tibetan style architecture and culture. Marpha is renowned for its production of world class (and extremely potent !) brandy and Tatopani (which means 'hot water') is a great place for food and also where you can bath in the hot springs..
Tatopani has been a stopping point for pilgrims for many years, it has been regarded as an idyllic halt for trekkers since trekking began to become popular in the early 1980s.
We spend a day enjoying the hot springs - and some great food before a further two days hike upwards to Ghorepani.
The next morning we need to be up early for the trek to Poon Hill, one of the best spots to see and photograph the sunrise over the Himalayas.
On our return we rest for our final night in the beautiful large Gurung village of Ghandruk.
The last day is an easy descent to Nayapul where transport awaits for the one and a half hour journey back to Pokhara. Itinerary:

Panchase Trek.
Maximum Altitude: 2030 meters
Duration of Trek: 7 days camping

Panchase is a popular village destination for Nepalese pilgrims who come to pay their respects to the souls of their ancestors and to pay homage to the mountain gods.
It is an area much less frequented by trekkers that needs to be completed under canvas. A major advantage for the few foreigners who do venture this way is they can fully enjoy the intimacy and appreciate the ethnic diversity of the area with a feeling of exclusivity.
The trek also offers some splendid views of three 8000m+ peaks : Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu.
The area is inhabited mainly by Gurung people, who traditionally supply Gurkha soldiers to the British army.
From Panchase we follow a northern route skirting the popular Ghorepani trail and eventually reach the beautiful old village of Ghandrung. The final two days of our trek on the return leg to Pokhara are spent on a more frequented trail via Pothana and Dhampus.
The trek is relatively easy, its virtue lies in its remoteness from the larger settlements and busier trekking routes.

Maximum altitude: 2580 meters
Duration of trek: 7 days camping

A trek to Siklis is ideal for anyone who relishes nature and the countryside. The area is still almost completely undeveloped and you do not need to be an ucomplished hiker to visit Siklis.
The Siklis area lies northeast of Pokhara and alhough it lies close to the main Annapurna trekking trails, the route still has very few lodges or guesthouses.
Siklis is perched on a hillock at over 2000 metres,it is a classically beautiful Gurung village with narrow lanes that are flanked by stone and mud houses grouped in a traditional ribbon pattern. The village has five distinct neighbourhoods, Lama-thar, Sabha-thar, Harpu-thar, Dhaprang-tha and Gari-thar, each of which has its own specific role in the community.

Most people who visit Nepal aspire to see Everest at least once whilst they are here, whether it be through the easy option of a mountain flight or simply a glimpse from the rim of the Kathmandu Valley on a clear day. However, for those who prefer to make their encounter with this giant up close and personal, there is only one way to be truly intimate with the last earthly rung on the stairway to the heavens.

This is an extention of the Istant Everest Base Camp trek for those who have enough time and wish to trek to the airstrip at Lukla, rather than fly in. The six days trekking from Jiri to Lukla are really rewarding with a lot of alpine like scenery and some fascinating villages. another real bonus is the region is relatively free of trekkers. Most people find these extra days truly rewarding, they provide a good insight into traditions and lifestyles of the Tamang, Kami, Brahmin, Kshetri and Sherpa people who live here.
The overnight stop at Junbesi, Solu Khumbu's oldest Sherpa settlement, is a real highlight. An hour's hike above Junbesi is Tupten Chholing monastery with the villages of Mabung and Pangkarma along the way it makes for very interesting side trek.

The Langtang Valley:
Is a rich alpine valley abundant in flora and fauna that forms part of the Central Nepal Himalaya, north of Kathmandu.

Langtang is considered to be one of the most rewarding short treks in Nepal.
Less frequented by tourists, it offers wilderness experiences without the arduous two or three-day road journey often involved.

The valley provides opportunities to relax into local settlements as well as a good opportunity to study wildlife and bird life along the way. Tamang's (the main ethnic group)are Tibetan in every aspect all but for twenty miles.

Trekking into the high valley takes you almost to the base of the Nepal Himalaya that provides “a high mountain feel” without being too taxing. There is also an extensive glacier system to be discovered in the valley's upper reaches.
Langtang admittedly cannot boast any of the giant Himalayan peaks, but nonetheless its scenery is just as spectacular and photogenic as that on the more popular trails.

There is a lot of scope to vary treks in this region, one popular choice is to extend the nine day Langtang Valley hike for a further five days on through to the sacred lakes of Gosainkund (4300m) and the Helambu region. The Sacred Lakes at Gosainkund are said to have been created by Lord Shiva when he jabbed his trisul (trident) into the ground to form the headwaters of the Trisuli River. Treks in Langtang and Helambu are effectively combined by crossing the Laurebina Pass near Gosainkund. The beauty of extending is not only do you get an experience a different setting, but also the end of the trek is only an hour away by road from Kathmandu.

There are some beautiful forests in Helambu as well as some interesting settlements that are principally populated by Sherpa people. However the Sherpas of Helambu differ from the Everest region branch of the caste in language, dress and family lineage.

Langtang Valley Trek:
Maximum Altitude: 3900 meters
Duration of Trek: 09 days mountain lodge

This is one of the most highly rated of the shorter duration treks in Nepal, encompassing some excellent lush scenery and fantastic views of Langtang Lirung (7400m).
We begin with an overland drive to Syabrubesi, where we stay overnight. The following four days are spent walking through outstandingly beautiful country with forests of oak, rhododendron and pine, with ancient settlements slotted in along the way.
Above the tree line the valley widens providing a splendid view of Langtang Lirung. There follows a gradual ascent towards Langtang village and the headquarters of the Langtang National Park. Langtang is the last spot hospitable enough for all-year round habitation.
The inhabitants of langtang are Tibetan speaking pastoral farmers whose lifestyle is little changed from that of their ancestors who first colonised the valley from Kyirong in Tibet more than 300 years ago. Before this time Langtang had been regarded as a “hidden' valley”.

After leaving Langtang we continue on to the summer settlement of Kyangjin, where a rest day is taken, time to visit the small gomba and the cheese factory. The rest day also provides an opportunity to fully experience high mountain scenery and to further explore the extensive glacier system.
Two days are taken re-tracing the trail before ascending to Syabru village followed by a desent to Syabrubesi and overnight. The next day transport awaits for the journey back to Kathmandu.

Itinerary:

Langtang & Helambu Trekking via Gyanja La Pass:
Maximum Altitude : 5120 meters
Duration of Trek : 9 days' mountain lodge + 2 days' camping over the pass

This itinerary adds a dramatic extension to the basic Langtang Valley trek, in as much as we undertake a challenging hike across the Gyanja La pass. Two nights are spent under canvas in some fairly wild and remote countryside.
The trek initially follows the Langtang valley itinerary described above.
From Kyanjin Gompa we take a day to hike to the foot of Gyanja-La, where we rest for a night for acclimatisation and also to gauge the suitability of the weather. If it is fine enough, we press on upwards next morning to cross the pass, there follows a steep descent.
The following three days are spent camping in remote terrain completely away from human settlements. On the third day we reach Sermathang, a beautiful Sherpa village in the Helambu region, where we stay overnight. The next morning we descend to Melamchi Bazaar before the journey back to Kathmandu.

Trekking Remote regions / Summer Trekking.
Season June to September:

The Regions described here require a permit and are only possible if the group is camping and fully self-sufficient. Logistically there can also be problems, people either have to spend long bus journeys or take local flights with connections; Upper Mustang being the exception.
Whilst we do whatever is humanly possible to ensure that the organisation provided by Active Eye is to our standards, we can do nothing about weather, plane delays etc. Please bare this in mind if you are considering booking.
If problems do arise, it is normally not a case of canceling the tour, more one of adjusting the itinerary by the odd day or two. An outline trekking itinerary is available on request, this should be used as a guide only. We like to run these treks with two days either side in Kathmandu to account for any unforseen circumstances.

Upper Mustang: Maximum altitude 3,800 mtrs 10/12 days camping.

Upper Mustang is set within a mysterious arid and haunting wilderness e amongst the wind eroded hills and cliffs akin to a lunar landscap that border Tibet.
The region is set within the Himalayan rain shadow making it a wonderful summer trekking experience that is also not particularly difficult.

A Kingdom within the Kingdom of Nepal, Mustang still retains its own monarch. It was first opened to tourists in 1992 and then with strict limits on the amount of people allowed to travel there.

Our destination is Lo Manthang, the capital of upper Mustang. The town was built on the orders of the first King of Lo in 1380 A.D.

We basically trek up the Kali Ghandaki valley with occasional excursions high above the valley walls. Settlements here are scattered with little sign of cultivation between villages, making them somewhat akin to oasis.

The town stands as a monument to Lo Manthang's rich history and cultural heritage that flourished because of its prominent position on the major ancient salt trade route from Tibet to Nepal.

A maize of ghompas (religious shrines) and houses surround the kings palace all of which is contained within the eight meters high and 700 meters long boundary wall. Along the periphery of the boundary wall are a series of 14 guard towers, built to protect the town from its many envious enemies of the past.

Life here is deeply rooted in religion with chortens, mani walls (inscripted prayer walls) and monasteries in abundance. Prayer flags flutter above each house, placed there to convey mantras to all parts of the earth and the universe beyond.

The “up and back” journey to Lo Mantang can take as little as ten days although twelve provides an all round better experience. . Many who journey to Lo Manthang consider it to be one of life’s ultimate adventures.

The Dolpa region: Lower: Maximum altitude 5150.

Lower Dolpa is located in central west Nepal. It provides a wonderful opportunity to visit a landscape and culture far removed from that seen in other parts of the country. The region is divided into lower and upper with lower Dolpa being the most easily accessible and less taxing of the two regions to trek in. The best way to reach Dolpa is to take a flight to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu and a connecting flight to Jupal.

The focal point of the trek is the Shey Phoksundo National Park, a wildly remote and rugged protected area with amazing scenery and a wealth of fascinating ancient cultures. The park harbors some extremely rare plant and animal life, much of which is not found anywhere else in the country.

The trek can be done in eight days, but as with the Mustang trek, tagging on a few extra days makes for a much more rewarding experience and also allows extra time to 'play with' if there are any problems with travel arrangements.

We basically travel a circuit with the focal points being Shey Phoksundo lake and the Tarap valley. This whole area is shaped in history, soon after we commence trekking we reach Tarakot where the remains of a previous kingdom before it was overrun by King Privithi Narayan Sha who unified Nepal as we know it today are clearly evident .

Just east of Tarakot the trail swings north to follow the Tarap Valley for two days crossing and re crossing the Tarap Khola (river) before reaching Dho Tarap. This valley is a magic place steeped in religious significance with many Bonpo (a religion that pre dates Buddhism) and Buddhist temples.

Dho Tarap (4000 mtrs) is an ideal location to spend a couple of days. Magars and Gurungs mostly inhabit the flat upper valley floor although nowadays they speak and dress like the Tibetans they share the valley with. There are many temples to explore.
From Dho Tarap two high passes must be negotiated in order to reach Ringmo and Phoksundo Lake. The crossing can be made in two days but may need to be extended if there are unfavourable weather conditions.

The attractions of Phoksundo are all around; it is quite a large crystal blue lake fed by glaciers that stretch down to its shores. Time is spent here admiring the beauty that includes wonderful forests along with a three hundred meter waterfall. A further two days are spent trekking back to Juphal airstrip.

Rara Lake: Maximum altitude 4139 meters:

Rara Lake has the distinction of being the largest lake in Nepal; the lake along with the surrounding area was declared a National Park in 1976. Despite its outstanding beauty the region still receives very few tourists due to its isolation. We fly to Jumla from Kathmandu via Nepalgunj. There follows two or three days treking to reach the park. All food and supplies are taken with us. While the lake (situated at 2900 mtrs) is the obvious focal point of the park, there are some wonderful spruce forests to explore and an abundance of wildlife in the surrounding area. The region provides some wonderful day hikes and short treks from our base on the shores of Rara. One in particular is Chuchumare peak situated at 4039 mtrs; from here there are some spectacular mountain vistas.
