Is
a rich alpine valley abundant in flora and fauna that
forms part of the Central Nepal Himalaya, north of Kathmandu.
Langtang is considered
to be one of the most rewarding short treks in Nepal.
Less frequented by tourists, it offers wilderness
experiences without the arduous two or three-day road
journey often involved.
The valley provides opportunities to relax into local
settlements as well as a good opportunity to study
wildlife and bird life along the way. Tamang's (the
main ethnic group)are Tibetan in every aspect all
but for twenty miles.
Trekking into the high valley takes you almost to
the base of the Nepal Himalaya that provides “a
high mountain feel” without being too taxing.
There is also an extensive glacier system to be discovered
in the valley's upper reaches.
Langtang admittedly cannot boast any of the giant
Himalayan peaks, but nonetheless its scenery is just
as spectacular and photogenic as that on the more
popular trails.
There is a lot of scope to vary treks in this region,
one popular choice is to extend the nine day Langtang
Valley hike for a further five days on through to
the sacred lakes of Gosainkund (4300m) and the Helambu
region. The Sacred Lakes at Gosainkund are said to
have been created by Lord Shiva when he jabbed his
trisul (trident) into the ground to form the headwaters
of the Trisuli River. Treks in Langtang and Helambu
are effectively combined by crossing the Laurebina
Pass near Gosainkund. The beauty of extending is not
only do you get an experience a different setting,
but also the end of the trek is only an hour away
by road from Kathmandu.
There are some beautiful forests in Helambu as well
as some interesting settlements that are principally
populated by Sherpa people. However the Sherpas of
Helambu differ from the Everest region branch of the
caste in language, dress and family lineage.
Langtang Valley Trek:
Maximum Altitude: 3900
meters
Duration of Trek: 09 days mountain lodge
This is one of the most highly rated of the shorter
duration treks in Nepal, encompassing some excellent
lush scenery and fantastic views of Langtang Lirung
(7400m).
We begin with an overland drive to Syabrubesi, where
we stay overnight. The following four days are spent
walking through outstandingly beautiful country with
forests of oak, rhododendron and pine, with ancient
settlements slotted in along the way.
Above the tree line the valley widens providing a
splendid view of Langtang Lirung. There follows a
gradual ascent towards Langtang village and the headquarters
of the Langtang National Park. Langtang is the last
spot hospitable enough for all-year round habitation.
The inhabitants of langtang are Tibetan speaking pastoral
farmers whose lifestyle is little changed from that
of their ancestors who first colonised the valley
from Kyirong in Tibet more than 300 years ago. Before
this time Langtang had been regarded as a “hidden'
valley”.
After leaving Langtang we continue on to the summer
settlement of Kyangjin, where a rest day is taken,
time to visit the small gomba and the cheese factory.
The rest day also provides an opportunity to fully
experience high mountain scenery and to further explore
the extensive glacier system.
Two days are taken re-tracing the trail before ascending
to Syabru village followed by a desent to Syabrubesi
and overnight. The next day transport awaits for the
journey back to Kathmandu.

Trekking via Gyanja La Pass:
Maximum Altitude : 5120 meters
Duration of Trek : 9 days' mountain lodge + 2 days'
camping over the pass
This itinerary adds a dramatic extension to the basic
Langtang Valley trek, in as much as we undertake a
challenging hike across the Gyanja La pass. Two nights
are spent under canvas in some fairly wild and remote
countryside.
The trek initially follows the Langtang valley itinerary
described above.
From Kyanjin Gompa we take a day to hike to the foot
of Gyanja-La, where we rest for a night for acclimatisation
and also to gauge the suitability of the weather.
If it is fine enough, we press on upwards next morning
to cross the pass, there follows a steep descent.
The following three days are spent camping in remote
terrain completely away from human settlements. On
the third day we reach Sermathang, a beautiful Sherpa
village in the Helambu region, where we stay overnight.
The next morning we descend to Melamchi Bazaar before
the journey back to Kathmandu.

Trekking Remote
regions / Summer Trekking.
Season June to September:
The Regions described here require a permit and are
only possible if the group is camping and fully self-sufficient.
Logistically there can also be problems, people either
have to spend long bus journeys or take local flights
with connections; Upper Mustang being the exception.
Whilst we do whatever is humanly possible to ensure
that the organisation provided by Active Eye is to
our standards, we can do nothing about weather, plane
delays etc. Please bare this in mind if you are considering
booking.
If problems do arise, it is normally not a case of
canceling the tour, more one of adjusting the itinerary
by the odd day or two. An outline trekking itinerary
is available on request, this should be used as a
guide only. We like to run these treks with two days
either side in Kathmandu to account for any unforseen
circumstances.
Upper
Mustang: Maximum altitude 3,800 mtrs 10/12 days camping.
Upper
Mustang is set within a mysterious arid and haunting
wilderness e amongst the wind eroded hills and cliffs
akin to a lunar landscap that border Tibet.
The region is set within the Himalayan rain shadow
making it a wonderful summer trekking experience that
is also not particularly difficult.
A Kingdom within the Kingdom of Nepal, Mustang still
retains its own monarch. It was first opened to tourists
in 1992 and then with strict limits on the amount
of people allowed to travel there.
Our destination is Lo Manthang, the capital of upper
Mustang. The town was built on the orders of the first
King of Lo in 1380 A.D.
We basically trek up the Kali Ghandaki valley with
occasional excursions high above the valley walls.
Settlements here are scattered with little sign of
cultivation between villages, making them somewhat
akin to oasis.
The town stands as a monument to Lo Manthang's rich
history and cultural heritage that flourished because
of its prominent position on the major ancient salt
trade route from Tibet to Nepal.
A maize of ghompas (religious shrines) and houses
surround the kings palace all of which is contained
within the eight meters high and 700 meters long boundary
wall. Along the periphery of the boundary wall are
a series of 14 guard towers, built to protect the
town from its many envious enemies of the past.
Life
here is deeply rooted in religion with chortens, mani
walls (inscripted prayer walls) and monasteries in
abundance. Prayer flags flutter above each house,
placed there to convey mantras to all parts of the
earth and the universe beyond.
The “up and back” journey to Lo Mantang
can take as little as ten days although twelve provides
an all round better experience. . Many who journey
to Lo Manthang consider it to be one of life’s
ultimate adventures.
The
Dolpa region: Lower: Maximum altitude 5150.
Lower
Dolpa is located in central west Nepal. It provides
a wonderful opportunity to visit a landscape and culture
far removed from that seen in other parts of the country.
The region is divided into lower and upper with lower
Dolpa being the most easily accessible and less taxing
of the two regions to trek in. The best way to reach
Dolpa is to take a flight to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu
and a connecting flight to Jupal.
The focal point of the trek is the Shey Phoksundo
National Park, a wildly remote and rugged protected
area with amazing scenery and a wealth of fascinating
ancient cultures. The park harbors some extremely
rare plant and animal life, much of which is not found
anywhere else in the country.
The trek can be done in eight days, but as with the
Mustang trek, tagging on a few extra days makes for
a much more rewarding experience and also allows extra
time to 'play with' if there are any problems with
travel arrangements.
We basically travel a circuit with the focal points
being Shey Phoksundo lake and the Tarap valley. This
whole area is shaped in history, soon after we commence
trekking we reach Tarakot where the remains of a previous
kingdom before it was overrun by King Privithi Narayan
Sha who unified Nepal as we know it today are clearly
evident .
Just east of Tarakot the trail swings north to follow
the Tarap Valley for two days crossing and re crossing
the Tarap Khola (river) before reaching Dho Tarap.
This valley is a magic place steeped in religious
significance with many Bonpo (a religion that pre
dates Buddhism) and Buddhist temples.
Dho Tarap (4000 mtrs) is an ideal location to spend
a couple of days. Magars and Gurungs mostly inhabit
the flat upper valley floor although nowadays they
speak and dress like the Tibetans they share the valley
with. There are many temples to explore.
From Dho Tarap two high passes must be negotiated
in order to reach Ringmo and Phoksundo Lake. The crossing
can be made in two days but may need to be extended
if there are unfavourable weather conditions.
The
attractions of Phoksundo are all around; it is quite
a large crystal blue lake fed by glaciers that stretch
down to its shores. Time is spent here admiring the
beauty that includes wonderful forests along with
a three hundred meter waterfall. A further two days
are spent trekking back to Juphal airstrip.
Rara
Lake: Maximum altitude 4139 meters:
Rara
Lake has the distinction of being the largest lake
in Nepal; the lake along with the surrounding area
was declared a National Park in 1976. Despite its
outstanding beauty the region still receives very
few tourists due to its isolation. We fly to Jumla
from Kathmandu via Nepalgunj. There follows two or
three days treking to reach the park. All food and
supplies are taken with us. While the lake (situated
at 2900 mtrs) is the obvious focal point of the park,
there are some wonderful spruce forests to explore
and an abundance of wildlife in the surrounding area.
The region provides some wonderful day hikes and short
treks from our base on the shores of Rara. One in
particular is Chuchumare peak situated at 4039 mtrs;
from here there are some spectacular mountain vistas.
